A Preliminary Evaluation of Alternative Liquid Desiccants for a Hybrid Desiccant Air Conditioner

This paper presents the results of apreliminary investigation at The University ofTexas at Austin of alternative liquid desiccantsfor use in a hybrid desiccant air-conditioningsystem in which a desiccant is circulated betweenthe evaporator and the condenser of a vapor-compressionair conditioner. The liquid desiccantsstudied were lithium chloride, lithium bromide,calcium chloride, and triethylene glycol. Eachcandidate desiccant was subjected to a screeningprocess which weighed the merits of the desiccantin terms of selected characteristics. The bestliquid desiccant for the anticipated applicationwas found to be calcium chloride.
